This new moon is in one of mars’s sign. Not the reckless rush of Aries. Scorpio is slow, strategic, and introspective. When I think of Scorpio characters it’s Uma Thurman in Kill Bill Vol 1, or Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. They want the truth, however painful it may be. Scorpio expects life to be full of hard and painful truths. Scorpio season is the heart of fall, as the northern hemisphere embraces rest and decay.
"For every bird there is a stone thrown at a bird. For every loved child, a child broken, bagged sunk in a lake..."
Maggie Smith good bones
There is something starting here in the dark. Scorpio already has a tendency towards cutting away what no longer works. This new moon has mars just two degrees away fro the new moon. This may be a beginning that starts with cutting away. Mars rules knives after all.
At the same time, it is all opposing uranus in Taurus. Uranus is upending a material part of our lives. It would be a lie to tell you that this will be easy. This beginning requires a sacrifice, something released to renew ourselves. Or it may be a change forced upon us, whether we’re ready or not.
This new moon in many ways feels like a precursor to the mars cazimi in Scorpio on November 17th. A cazimi is when the sun meets up with a planet, in this case mars. It’s a time of renewal, laser focused on our power, our strategy, our commitment to the depth of emotional truth.
I don’t want to leave you dreading the next few days. It may feel intense and asking a lot of us. Yet, there are ways to cope with this. This new moon feels a bit like when I was kid at the beach. One of my favorite games was jumping and playing in the waves. It was all about watching and timing your moves with the water. We had to know when we could jump and allow the current to lift us up. Most important? Knowing when to dive below and let the wave pass over you. In many ways, this new moon feels like one of those large waves, coming for our lives. What are the tools, the coping mechanisms we have to watch and adapt, or dive under?
Despite all of this, there’s a wholly other part of our lives that may feel bright even strangely hopeful. Venus is at home in Libra, making a beautiful sextile to mercury in Sagittarius. Mercury doesn’t have great dignity in Sagittarius. Still, it’s optimistic, social, even expansive. In this harmonious aspect, mercury and venus together seek a new order. They believe that beauty and harmony might just work out. Don’t be afraid to revel in this optimism or the way it works out for you small or large.
Perhaps it’s my Sagittarius moon, but this makes me hopeful. There’s a feeling of mercury charging ahead, trying to find the light, even if we can’t fully see it yet. The sun will join mercury in Sagittarius ten days later (don’t worry, I’ll be sharing more about that as we approach the Gemini full moon on Nov 27!)
