It’s a new year and frankly? I wanted to explore the astrology in a new way. As a nosey beach, I love exploring astrology through celebrity and pop culture. So I thought, why not share some music that comes to mind? Not only do I have a curated playlist for you but a little note on why these songs embody this new moon for me.
Begin Again
Every new moon is a beginning. So this time, we had to start with the Capricorn queen herself, Taylor Swift. This song highlights the contradiction of a Capricorn new moon. On the one hand, Capricorn likes to look back, but here we are on the threshold of something new. If you need a song to help you begin slow and steady, this is it.
Color in Your Cheeks
I had to include this song and not just because the band is called The Mountain Goats. This song is about refugees and supporting each other. The Capricorn moon friends in my life show this kind of care and love. They show up, ready to give practical support, whether it’s bringing you in from the cold or ensuring you have a good, warm drink.
Daddy Lessons
This time around, Mars is in Capricorn with the Sun and Moon. Now Mars in Capricorn is a force to reckon with. Mars becomes a dedicated soldier here who will climb any mountain and hold his weapon steady. This song highlights that feeling of recklessness but also following paternal guidance. If there’s a song to help you channel this exalted Mars, it’s this.
From Elvis to Ariana: Capricorn Musicians
Sometimes you don’t need to look at lyrics to get the Capricorn energy: some musicians embody it. Both Elvis and Dolly Parton have the Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Capricorn. Meanwhile, Aaliyah and Bowie had Sun, Mercury, & Mars here.
I had to include Ariana Grande for this Capricorn moment. She’s a Capricorn rising, and having her Saturn return in Pisces. This new moon in Capricorn, is ruled by Saturn currently in Pisces. This makes her natal chart a potent way to understand Saturn's struggle in dreamy Pisces. Just listen to the fantasy and resistance in ‘Goodnight and Go’ and you’ll hear it too.
Fickleness?
This new moon isn’t just a Capricorn story. Both Mercury and Venus are in Sagittarius. It’s a perfect excuse to bring in Rag’n’Bone Man’s song ‘Arrow’ for our celestial archer.
Interestingly, the ancient astrologer Valens wrote about the trouble Venus and Mercury can do together. He wrote, “make men unsteady and fickle with respect to women”. Especially as Mercury is doing it’s final round in Sagittarius, I wanted to bring in ‘Diane’ by Cam. This song is all about a woman discovering she was the other woman. The best part? She’s trying to communicate with the wife.
Dedication Through Time
If there’s a way to show you care to Capricorn placements, it’s enduring. If you could start something that could remain, what would it be? Maybe you’d promise like Tyler Childers to be a better lover in ‘Shake the Frost’. Perhaps you’re ready to wait '1,000 years' like Liza Anne to understand what happened.
Wherever you land, TLC reminds in ‘Waterfalls’ that this isn’t a time to rush. It’s about slowing down and being thoughtful. As Mercury continues to to gain speed, there will be time to move quickly. For now, it’s a question of what hopes are you ready to begin to bring in?
What do you think? Any songs or artists you think should have been part of this playlist?
