Many come to me wanting to know what is going to happen. The art of being an astrologer is balancing the dozen ways a transit can manifest but sharing how it will probably impact you. For most things, like a Venus retrograde or the Moon changing signs, I can give examples. Eclipses? That’s a different beast.
Eclipses are unpredictable because their nature is disruptive. Think of it this way: for millennia humanity had two main sources of light and tracking time: the sun and moon. We tracked our lives by their constant and consistent pattern. Then, there’s a random day or night that suddenly changes. Instead of a bright full moon, it’s a dim blood red. Or one day you are working and suddenly the sun is swallowed by the moon and the world is dark. It was terrifying, like being caught in a riptide.
So what is the nature of an eclipse astrologically? Is it good? Is it bad? It depends. Eclipses are challenging because they signal dramatic change. As humans, most of us are bad at major changes.
Before you panic, eclipses don’t always unfold loudly. Sometimes, it’s as subtle as going on a last minute date and finding your life partner. Other times, it’s a random conversation that pushes you to finally pursue your dream. It’s one of those moments when the universe seems to reset. As if we're all inside a computer that unexpectedly restarts.
Solar eclipse in Libra
On Saturday, October 14, the eclipse is in Libra. Libra is a cardinal air sign with the scales as its symbol. Libra acts like a diplomat, trying to begin things in a beautiful harmony for all. This signals a major disruptive beginning. A standard new moon in Libra would be a time for slight tweaks to get the balance right. But this eclipse asks, are we even measuring the right things for balance? Or is the scale itself broken?
We are being asked to go deep and look at the dark underbelly of power. The eclipse squares Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto represents the underworld, power dynamics, and vast resources. To truly begin again, we have to name our skeletons. How have vast resources been used to tip the scales? How can we reshape Capricorn’s hierarchies towards a more just and equitable world?
5 tips for getting through eclipses
It may seem hopeless to prepare for the chaotic and uncontrollable. But there are ways you can make this easier on yourself.
Leave space in your calendar. If chaos is the name of the game, extra time can’t hurt you. Eclipses are often energetically and emotionally draining. I often need a nap the day after the eclipse.
Get grounded. Whether it’s walking barefoot or quiet meditation, use your grounding practices. It can create sosem eaese during this chaotic energy.
Take time to reflect. Whether you journal, call your bestie, or go for a long run, give yourself time to process these events.
Skip the rituals. If you love using new moons for charging crystals or setting intentions, you may be tempted by an eclipse. This is not easy or stable energy to work with. Just wait: Better moons to work with are coming in November.
Let something go. This is a south node eclipse, so it is especially focused on release. Letting go of some items, even if it’s cleaning out your junk drawer, can help.
How will the eclipse impact you?
This eclipse illuminates something in each of our charts. These are just some of the questions I’ve been discussing with clients as we approach the eclipse.
